However, pleae don't ask here - it makes efficient tracking of bugs very difficult.įor those with problems on high dpi displays such as Surface Pro 3 or Yoga 2 Pro, you can easily resolve this until eclipse is updated to work with high DPI displays in just two steps.ġ) Tell Windows to ignore settings from within applications (which are clearly wrong, since the UI is unusable) if a "manifest" file is available.

If you want to develop software I suggest that you search on for recommended IDEs for your language/framework. Since eclipse has thousands of use cases we can't recommend you an alternative if you don't tell us what you intend to do with it. > alternative programm, but my search wasnt successfull until now. Make sure that the native screen resolution is an exact multiple of your selected resolution, though. You (probably) won't notice any difference and Eclipse (and other tools you might have problems with) will work fine. If you are not keen on having an 8K resolution, just set your resolution to 1920x1080. > nearly impossible to work with this programm. I don't want to judge your comment but it doesn't seem to add relevant information (first part) nor belong here (second part). 09:14:13 reply to Tom Niklas from comment #56)

I realize this is a lot of work but your code will be better equipped to handle other/multiple resolutions and zooming in the future.įYI: These opinions are my own and I do not work for Apple nor Oracle. Create them in vector format, render and cache them as bitmaps for the screen resolutions you need and then draw the cached bitmaps instead.

To me it seems like you are using a too-low-level method of drawing icons. Web trends usually go a bit faster than native application trends but I would expect the same to happen on the desktop eventually. If you look at the webbrowser world the trend is to replace bitmaps with vector graphics so that they look better on different resolutions and that the user can easily scale them and still have it look great. It will look like Windows 3.11 control panels in Windows 8. So assuming that you can get away with just duplicating the icons on HiDPI screens is not right.Įven if you could, the doubled up icons will look out of place on a Retina screen because the rest onscreen, like fonts etc, will be twice the resolution. I hear people complaining about the small size of the menu bar on laptops for example.Īlso, in the Windows world there are many, many different displays with huge variations in resolution. As an Apple user I would expect the UI to be zoomable in non-integer steps because that makes it easier to to use for people with varying eyesight. I expect them to eventually deprecate bitmaps in user applications and have application developers use scalable icons like SVG or Display PostScript/PDF instead. They even provided a developer application to zoom the UI but they held off because of existing applications. Years ago Apple wanted to make the UI fully scalable by the user at arbitrary resolution. In my opinion that will not hold in the future. I thought user Hennus Bergman's comments were particularly interesting:Īpple Retina support works because the Retina resolution on Apple Retina devices is an exact multiple of the old 'Standard' resolution. Peter, the dialog on that is very informative.

Here are some resources on how this issue is handled by Apple on Mac and iOS and by Google on Android: For best looking results 32x32 icon would need to be designed separately and would be more detailed than the 16x16 version. Automatic scaling is fine, but it's just a workaround. So for a 16x16 icon we need to be able to provide both 16x16 and 32x32 sized images. A proper solution needs to allow specifying different images for different screen densities either by convention or explicitly. Apple scales images up automatically when needed so the app works properly, but icons don't look sharp. Not sure if there is a way to enable this mode beforehand on the exe file.Ī proper solution needs to address Mac platform too (see Bug 382972). In this mode Windows will scale up the icons automatically.

Still with extremely small icons and lettersĪ workaround that works on Windows is to enable Windows XP compatibility mode (right click on the exe, choose Properties and go to Compatibility tab).
